Verizon Offers Tips to Keep Children Safe from the Risk of Cyberthreats this Summer

Verizon Offers Tips to Keep Children Safe from the Risk of Cyberthreats this Summer
Type: News

Verizon announced it is providing help for reducing cyberthreats by offering tips and links to resources for children during the summer vacations.

"The first line of defense against online threats is quite naturally in the home," said Wade Baker, Author of Verizon's annual Data Breach Investigations Report. "So many of the things we do online today -- from using social media to keep in touch with school buddies to downloading movies and music can carry some risks. Like sunscreen and staying hydrated, cybersafety is part of staying safe during summer vacation."
In recognition of Internet Safety Month in June, Verizon reported that it is working with national experts to raise awareness about online safety issues. During the month, Verizon's Parental Controls Center will release series of educational videos on cyberbullying to highlight actionable advice for parents. Verizon, along with Verizon Foundation partner Common Sense Media, will also run a national public service advertising campaign across its television, online and wireless platforms to raise awareness about the integral role parents play in their children's digital lives.

Verizon is also offering parents these 10 online safety tips:

1. Your information is private. Parents should make sure their kids are not sharing personal information on social networking sites that might endanger them or family members and friends. The same goes for online games and other applications.

2. Take a few minutes to monitor. The best approach is for parents to monitor what their kids are doing online, Verizon security expert Baker suggests, and don't just assume they're doing all the right things.

3. Free downloads aren't always free or safe. A recent study by Verizon security partner McAfee indicates that online media is one of the biggest moneymakers for cybercriminals. With demand for online music, movies, television and more at an all-time high, it is an attractive venue for crooks. The McAfee study counsels against searching for free content because of the potential risk associated with some sites carrying such content. For example, the study found that using the word "free" when searching for ringtones resulted in a threefold increase in the risk of visiting sites returned by major search engines in English.

Besides the fact that downloading free music or movies from suspect sites may be illegal, it could also lead to viruses and other malware being downloaded to a family computer.

4. Find great resources. While June is Internet Safety Month, there are great resources available year-round. The Verizon Parental Controls Center features links to many free resources for parents, educators and kids to help families manage the digital experience that is right for them. In addition to free controls for computers and other devices, the Verizon Parental Controls Center provides insight on such topical issues as cyberbullying, online gaming and managing online privacy. The site also links to public service sites such as WiredSafety.org and Webwisekids.org and educational resources from Verizon Foundation's Thinkfinity.org website. Verizon is also engaged in the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. campaign, the national effort by government and industry, led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Anti-Phishing Working Group, to educate people about how to stay safe and secure online. In addition to the campaign, the NCSA offers a host of resources, tips and information for parents and educators.

5. Have a clearly defined set of rules. Kids have just spent the better part of the year following the rules at school, so a few house rules during the summer shouldn't be onerous.

6. Talk to your children about how they use technology. It's easy to get caught up in our busy lives and neglect the opportunity to ask children about what they do online or to discuss such topics as inappropriate content and cyberbullying.

7. Install Internet filters. Whether they're looking for it or stumble upon it while browsing, kids can be exposed to inappropriate online content; so make sure you have the latest net filters installed and activated. Schools have them, and they can helpful in the home.

8. Make sure your online security tools are up to date. You need online security tools to protect your family from accidentally downloading viruses, worms and other online threats. You should also determine how comprehensive your protection is. Will it protect from phishing and spyware? Does it include security for your home Wi-Fi network or a customizable firewall?

9. Keep your files safe with online backup. When all else fails, backing up important files -- photos and movies, music, documents, etc. will help minimize the impact of a cyberattack or computer failure.

10. Give kids alternatives. Encourage your children to participate in worthwhile traditional activities such as sports, dance, camp or extracurricular classes. Some children will do better with structured activities and others may prefer to be self- directed, but you should help your children find something that keeps them from sitting in front of a computer all day.

MELBOURNE, Aug 1 AAP - About 250 shoppers and 20 workers were evacuated after a small

NSW: Man accused of war crimes loses defamation case

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - A man who was accused of brutal war crimes in the Balkans has
lost his defamation case against The Australian newspaper.

Australian citizen, Daniel Snedden - also known as Dragan Vasiljkovic - sued the paper's
publishers Nationwide News Limited over the September 2005 article.

A jury found it contained a number of defamatory meanings, including that he condoned
the rape of women and girls, was a mercenary and a Death Squad commander.

On Friday, Justice Megan Latham found in favour of the publishers, which had argued
a truth defence.

In September, a full bench of the Federal Court allowed an appeal by the 54-year-old
Serbian-born Snedden against his extradition to Croatia.

He had been accused of killing civilians when he was a paramilitary commander there
in the early 1990s.

NSW: Police corruption probes into top officers report tomorrow

Two explosive police corruption reports .. centred on a couple of senior New South
Wales investigators .. will be tabled in state parliament tomorrow.

The two unrelated Police Integrity Commission reports examine the conduct of leading
Homicide Squad Detective PAUL JACOB and Sydney Superintendent ADAM PURCELL.

NSW Police Minister DAVID CAMPBELL says he won't comment on the reports until after
they've been tabled in parliament.

But he says they demonstrate there are checks and balances in place .. and that no-one
is going to tolerate illegal behaviour by police.

Mr CAMPBELL's declined to comment on claims one report reveals an officer had been
sacked for leaking information that a child sex predator was living in a western Sydney
community.

The PIC is expected to make recommendations on whether Police Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE
can order the dismissal of Superintendent PURCELL.

Phone intercepts have revealed him leaking details of a sexual assault complaint and
criticising senior police.

Mr JACOB is in the spotlight for allegedly "going easy" on former Bathurst detective
inspector BRAD HOSEMANS .. who's a person of interest in the disappearance and suspected
murder of Bathurst woman JANINE VAUGHAN.

Fed: Macfarlane giving green light to Aust polluters, says Oxfam

CANBERRA, Feb 13 AAP - Aid group Oxfam says Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane has effectively
given a green light to Australian companies operating overseas to pollute rivers and oceans.

Oxfam, which campaigns against illegal dumping in impoverished countries, says Mr Macfarlane
is turning a blind eye to what companies do in developing nations.

Mr Macfarlane said at an APEC mining conference yesterday that Australia expected all
APEC countries to set their own guidelines for companies that operated within their borders.

"Australia respects the sovereign rights of every member country of APEC to set its
own rules," he said.

Nations taking part in the Perth meetings include some of the world's biggest mineral
producers, including Australia, Canada, Peru, Chile and the US.

Oxfam Australia said Mr Macfarlane's comments were disingenuous at best.

"The federal government is well aware that the environmental protection laws of countries
such as Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and The Philippines where Australian miners operate
are much less regulated than at home," Oxfam Australia executive director Andrew Hewitt
said in a statement.

"The Australian sense of fair-go appears not to extend to some of our poorest neighbours.

"Lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by the unsafe practices of Australian mining
companies who dump toxic waste into rivers and oceans just because the local law allows
it."

Mr Hewitt said Oxfam believed Australian companies involved in mining operations could
contribute to local development and poverty alleviation.

"But to do so they must take a firm stand against practices that cause environmental
degradation, rob people of livelihoods and drive poverty."

Budget Costello (CANBERRA)

The Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has admitted there's pressure to ensure that Medicare
funding in the May Budget is sustainable as the population ages.

But he's declined to comment on whether he'll announce cuts.

Mr COSTELLO has dismissed as speculation media reports of planned cuts to the Medicare
safety net.

He's told Melbourne radio 3AW the government introduced the safety net and will be
keeping it, though on a sustainable basis.

Mr COSTELLO says the Budget will also answer defence commitment pressures and begin
addressing the challenge of the ageing population.

Tax Costello (CANBERRA)

Federal Treasurer PETER COSTELLO says there are positive signs the brawl between the
states and the federal government over the GST is over.

Mr COSTELLO and the states have been arguing over a 1999 agreement over GST revenue.

Under the agreement the states agreed to cut state-based taxes in return for guaranteed
GST revenue.

The states say they have already cut the taxes, while Mr COSTELLO says not enough has been done.

Mr COSTELLO has told Melbourne radio 3AW the states are beginning to come around to
view, but the NSW government has denied it's caved into the federal government demands.

Chopper Medals (CANBERRA)

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says the Queen has given approval for a medal to be awarded
to defence personnel serving in tsunami-hit areas.

They include nine Australians killed in the Sea King helicopter crash in Indonesia
on April the 2nd who will receive the honour posthumously.

Mr HOWARD says the Queen has approved changes to allow Australian troops to receive
the Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal even though it is usually given only to civilians.

He says defence personnel deployed as part Australia's contribution to tsunami affected
regions and the earthquake on the Indonesian island of Nias will now qualify for the award.

Resorts Sheraton (CORRECTION)

The company operating a Bali hotel at the centre of a child sex abuse claim says its
utmost concern is to protect the safety of its guests.

A spokesman for Starwood Hotels and Resorts, which runs what was formerly known as
the Sheraton Nusa Indah resort in Bali, refused to answer details about allegations a
three-year-old girl was sexually abused in 2001 and contracted gonorrhoea while at a creche
at the resort.

It's believed the girl's family sued the Sheraton resort chain for negligence in the
Victorian Supreme Court and won a $60,000 out-of-court settlement last year.

However, Justice Minister CHRIS ELLISON says there's no evidence of a systemic failure
of childcare services in Bali.

Doctor (BRISBANE)

An overseas-trained doctor who fled Australia after being dubbed Dr Death by Australian
colleages had been found guilty of gross negligence in the United States.

The doctor, who worked at Bundaberg Base Hospital, has been accused of gross incompetence
linked to the deaths or serious injury of at least 14 Australians.

He quit his job and fled Australia at Easter after an investigation into his work at
the public hospital.

The Brisbane Courier-Mail says an internet search has revealed that the doctor had
been cited over serious problems with his surgery in New York State and Oregon.

Queensland Medical Board executive officer JIM O'DEMPSEY says he's shocked at the failure
of the regulatory body to detect the doctor's background.

Pope Pell (SYDNEY)

An Italian newspaper has picked Archbishop of Sydney GEORGE PELL as one of 18 frontrunners
to replace Pope JOHN PAUL the SECOND.

The Australian newspaper says Italy's Il Giornale has praised Dr PELL'S communications

115 of the church's cardinals -- including Dr PELL -- will meet on Monday to begin

landing after a fuselage door burst open in midair turbulence.

Two police officers travelling with CLARK had to hold the door closed while the plane
made the emergency landing in the North Island town of Parapaumu, 50km north-east of the
capital Wellington shortly after 9am local time.

Scabies (MELBOURNE)

A scabies outbreak in a Melbourne aged care home has forced the hostel's management
to shut down the facility and quarantine residents.

Up to 40 people have been infected by the disease, in which tiny mites burrow into
the skin and cause severe itching.

Med Hair (TOKYO)

Japanese researchers say they've developed a soybean containing a substance that promotes
hair growth and helps prevent hair loss caused by chemotherapy.

The Kyoto University researchers say that if the safety of the genetically-modified

soybean still needs to be confirmed.

Canada Gays (OTTAWA)

Members of the Canadian Parliament have voted down a Conservative motion that would
have derailed the minority Liberal government's bill to legalise gay marriage.

Prime Minister PAUL MARTIN's Liberal Party introduced the legislation, which would

make Canada one of only three countries in the world to recognise gay marriage.

To date only Belgium and the Netherlands allow gays to legally marry.

US Bolton (WASHINGTON)

US President GEORGE W BUSH'S nominee as ambassador to the United Nations, JOHN BOLTON,
has been depicted at a Senate hearing as a bully who tried to force an analyst to bend
intelligence on Cuba's weapons to fit a speech he was giving.

State Department official CARL FORD says BOLTON abused an analyst who delayed BOLTON'S
speech because it overstated information on Cuba's weapons.

aid and abet

aid and abet To assist in the performance of a crime either before or during (but not after) its commission. Aiding usually refers to material assistance (e.g. providing the tools for the crime), and abetting to lesser assistance (e.g. acting as a look-out or driving a car to the scene of the crime). Aiders and abettors are liable to be tried as accessories. Mere presence at the scene of a crime is not regarded as aiding and abetting. It is unnecessary to have a criminal motive to be guilty of aiding and abetting: knowledge that one is assisting the criminal is sufficient. See also impeding apprehension or prosecution.

-TASKFORCE 2000: World's most comprehensive study shows government unprepared for Y2K impact.

M2 PRESSWIRE-11 November 1998-TASKFORCE 2000: World's most comprehensive study shows government unprepared for year 2000 date change impact (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD RDATE:111198 -- Public sector problems now unavoidable Taskforce 2000 today published the world's most comprehensive and detailed analysis of a government's preparedness to deal with the Year 2000 date change. The study, sponsored by Compuware, shows that it is too late to prevent the so-called 'Millennium Bug' striking at the heart of Government. Robin Guenier, executive director of Taskforce 2000, said: "The public sector is in trouble. It has been slow in getting to grips with this and now is forced to engage in damage limitation. This study demonstrates that Government is still struggling to come to terms with the size of the task it faces. To avoid the worst of it, the Cabinet must recognise that it is facing an emergency, as the Prime Minister indicated in March." Report author, Ian Hugo, said: "My report is based on information published by the Government, it is not a detailed audit of Government systems. It is probable that a full audit of the whole of the public sector would show a much more serious situation. It is very difficult to be hopeful of a satisfactory outcome." In its role as an independent commentator and think tank, Taskforce 2000 has scrutinised official figures made public at the initiative of Dr David Clark MP whilst in Government. This scrutiny has resulted in the following findings: Edited highlights Government is still massively under budgeted for the cost impact of fixing its systems - it has already adjusted its estimates for the total public sector from UKP1 billion to UKP3 billion. However, "cost creep", as evidenced in the report, and private sector experience indicate that a comprehensive fix for the public sector would be in the region of UKP7-8 billion. Attrition or "Death by a Thousand Cuts" is now a real threat to public sector services. Major individual failures can and probably will be prevented, but this does not guarantee a successfully outcome. Taskforce 2000 believes that, at the present rate of progress, a process of attrition, where individually minor failures occur repeatedly and successively within a short space of time, handicapping normal delivery of services to a point where delivery grinds to a halt, is a likely outcome. The study reveals that all departments have left adequate action desperately late and few come close to good practice in the private sector. There is still an enormous amount of work to be done in all Departments and Agencies. For the first time, to help the public and media focus their attention, Taskforce 2000 has ranked central Government departments and agencies into four categories: good progress, low risk, medium risk and high risk. Testing of systems is crucial to a successful outcome and absorbs at least 50 per cent of required resources. All departments have inadequate testing programmes at present and time is fast running out. Inadequate testing would mean a real and unacceptable risk of systems being disrupted by major failures. There is little in the Government's published information about contingency planning. Things will go wrong and it is essential that detailed plans be put in place to deal with this. Such plans must be made public so that the private sector can adjust its plans to those of the Government. Government has so far not adopted a "change freeze". Corrected systems do not necessarily stay that way and large volumes of changes create instability in IT systems. Best practice in the private sector has implemented a freeze on additional change and overseas, the Canadian Government, for example, has stipulated that new legislation is subordinate to Year 2000 programmes. "Taskforce 2000 believes that the Government should now go further and require the wider public sector, the NHS and local authorities, to publish details of their Year 2000 planning. Also, there is a desperate need for information about the utilities," Guenier concluded. Steve Busby, European Business Director for Testing, Compuware, said: "We have sponsored this study with the aim of focusing attention on the importance of getting systems ready for the Millennium. We have only 13 months left and the situation for many in both the public and private sector is becoming critical. There is still time to dramatically speed up Y2K projects with the effective use of skills and automated tools. However, urgent action now will save a great deal of heartache later!" About Compuware Corporation Compuware has been providing testing solutions for 25 years and is the world-wide leader of the Automated Sofware Quality (ASQ) market, providing debugging, functional, load, data, process, Y2K and Euro testing solutions for mainframe, client/server and Internet environments. Research and Markets: The Future of Household Care Consumer Trends in Australia.

DUBLIN -- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/eabc9d/the_future_of_hous) has announced the addition of the "The Future of Household Care Consumer Trends in Australia" report to their offering.

Understanding the most important trends impacting Australian consumers requires a broader understanding of the macro environment forces that have affected Australia in recent years. This report outlines how these social drivers translate into distinct attitudinal and behavioral shifts among Australian consumers with respect to household care shopping and consumption.

Features and benefits:

* Identify the five most important consumer developments occurring in Australia, and understand how these affect consumers' household care choices

* Gain an in-depth understanding of the broader socio-demographic, economic and technological forces shaping Australian consumer behavior

* Benefit from Australia-focused consumer insight, benchmarked against global sentiment, to cater for contextualized, region-specific information needs

Highlights:

* Nearly one-quarter of Australians will be over 65 by 2050. Addressing population aging requires rethinking of all aspects of a company's marketing strategyfrom product design to promotion. Companies need to take a proactive approach to addressing this historically undervalued segment, in order to capitalize on rapidly shifting demographic trends.

* Over four-in-10 Australians find shopping enjoyable, but almost the same proportion think there is too much product choice when shopping. Retailers can reconcile this paradox by competing on non-price characteristics such as customer service and in-store layout, to ensure the shopping experience is interesting and engaging for Australians.

* Less than half of Australians believe natural household cleaning products are as effective as non-natural offerings. Manufacturers of natural products need to be doing more to convince consumers that the science of natural formulation does not mean a compromise.

Your key questions answered:

* How do Australian consumers define 'value-for-money' and how have value orientations changed in recent years?

* How are Australians using the internet to make household care choices? What influence is improving connectivity exerting on Australian lifestyles?

* How will private label household care products fare now that the economic downturn is effectively over? What do Australians think about private label?

* What are the most influential claims guiding Australians' household care choices? How do these relate to more general attitudes towards the home?

* What are the latest products and brands that are effectively addressing the needs of Australian household care consumers?

Brands to watch:

* Coles Green Choice

* Method

* This Works

* P&G Future Friendly

* Seventh Generation

'97 expected to further thin the ranks of loan servicers.(Brief Article)

It was only the beginning.

The spate of mergers that took place between mortgage banks this year was just the start of what could turn into a wave of companies exiting the business.

At least one of the top 10 mortgage servicers will be acquired in 1997, says David M. Partridge, a director at Towers Perrin, a consulting firm in Valhalla, N.Y.

In addition, he said, as companies become increasingly dissatisfied with low profit margins, one of the top five servicers may sell off that side of its business.

Mr. Partridge and Paul T. Johnson, another Towers Perrin consultant, would not single out lenders that they thought were looking to sell. But the two said they could identify companies that are likely to stick around.

This category includes Norwest Mortgage, Countrywide Credit Industries, NationsBanc Mortgage, and BankAmerica Mortgage.

Norwest and Countrywide are the two largest servicers in the nation. NationsBanc ranks sixth and BankAmerica eighth.

Mr. Partridge also predicted that some 20% of all servicers will sell their portfolios in 1997. If that happens, $500 billion in servicing rights could change hands, he said.

On the originations side, Mr. Johnson predicted that 10% to 20% of lenders will exit the loan production business, because it is the least profitable part of mortgage banking. He said that only a significant drop in interest rates would prevent a rash of companies from selling or closing down.

The two consultants said the new year will also present other challenges to the industry. Mr. Partridge said one wild card is whether real estate brokers will be able to compete with traditional mortgage banks.

In November, HFS Inc., owner of real estate brokerage agencies Century 21 and Coldwell Banker, said it would purchase PHH Corp., one of the largest mortgage originators.

Mr. Partridge said that if HFS can get 30% to 40% of its brokerage customers to also apply for a PHH mortgage, it will create a fundamental change in how mortgages are originated. The merger could make it easier for customers to get a loan at the point of a home purchase, he noted.

Mr. Johnson said technology companies will also begin to play a larger role in mortgage banking. He said software producers like Microsoft, which are known for effective marketing and distribution of products, could partner with financial institutions to offer alternatives like the Internet as a place to shop for mortgages.

"Customers are clearly accepting of people like Bill Gates," Mr. Partridge said.

OMNINET MEDIA.COM, INC. (OTCBB: ONMC), soon to be AQUAGOLD International, Inc., stated on December 19th 2007, "Upon completion of the filing of the final merger documents with both the State of Nevada and NASDAQ, OMNINET MEDIA.COM, INC. will immediately file the official name change to AQUAGOLD International, Inc. and apply for a new CUSIP number. We have also pioneering a new way to research companies before you invest them. It's called a Stockumentary. A Stockumentary is a documentary on a publicly traded company. Imagine a Dateline NBC segment, but on a publicly traded company. We are the first company to ever bring this type of quality research to investors in this format.

The Stockumentary has video interviews with management, product demos, video tours of office or factory, research reports, sec filings and much more. All of this is delivered to investors in high quality video, either by mail or email.

Stockwire.com is owned by Stockwire Research Group Inc. (SRGI) and is an independent electronic publication committed to providing our readers with factual information on selected publicly traded companies.
