NSW: Man accused of war crimes loses defamation case

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - A man who was accused of brutal war crimes in the Balkans has
lost his defamation case against The Australian newspaper.

Australian citizen, Daniel Snedden - also known as Dragan Vasiljkovic - sued the paper's
publishers Nationwide News Limited over the September 2005 article.

A jury found it contained a number of defamatory meanings, including that he condoned
the rape of women and girls, was a mercenary and a Death Squad commander.

On Friday, Justice Megan Latham found in favour of the publishers, which had argued
a truth defence.

In September, a full bench of the Federal Court allowed an appeal by the 54-year-old
Serbian-born Snedden against his extradition to Croatia.

He had been accused of killing civilians when he was a paramilitary commander there
in the early 1990s.
