Qld: Brutal boys played golf with baby birds

A gang of boys has caused outrage in a Queensland town by playing golf with baby birds
during a four day spree of cruelty.

About 30 juvenile cattle egrets have been killed or injured, with one bird also speared
with a wooden skewer during the attacks in a park at Bundaberg, 350 kilometres north of
Brisbane.

Wildlife carer DAVID DERRETT says the group of boys aged between between 10 and 14
began the attacks on Sunday in the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.

He says a witness saw the egrets being shaken out of their nest.

A spokesman for the Bundaberg City Council says security guards are on patrol in the
botanic gardens after council workers leave for the day and police patrols have also been
stepped up.
