BERLIN -- The following information was released by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology of Germany:
At the CeBIT IT fair in Hanover today, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) announced the winners of its "Trusted Cloud" Technology Competition, which is geared towards safe cloud computing for SMEs and the public sector. A total of 116 project proposals were submitted following a call for proposals in September 2010. Of these, an expert jury selected 12 projects to be supported by the Federal Economics Ministry.
The Federal Economics Ministry's new "Trusted Cloud" programme aims to tap the immense potential that cloud computing holds for the economy. The programme seeks to address IT security and data protection issues at an early stage in this emerging area and to establish Germany internationally as an attractive place for cloud computing. This technology programme is the Federal Economics Ministry's key contribution to the Cloud Computing Action Programme launched in October 2010 together with partners from business and science. Cloud computing offers forward-looking possibilities, in particular for SMEs and the public sector: Instead of having to establish their own expensive IT infrastructure, they can increasingly draw on tailor-made IT solutions via the internet.
With its Trusted Cloud Programme, the Federal Economics Ministry is contributing approx. 50 million euros over the next three years to support the development and testing of innovative, secure and legal cloud solutions.Together with the project partners' contribution, a total of around 100 million euros will be available for the Trusted Cloud Programme. The specific Trusted Cloud projects relate to four topic clusters:
Cluster 1: Basic Technologies
The "Sealed Cloud" project will create a sealed cloud computing infrastructure to protect data and applications against both internal attacks and abuse (coordinator: Uniscon universal identity control GmbH).
"SkIdentity" will set up an "identity broker", which links the cloud computing infrastructure to the authentication function of the new ID card (coordinator: ecsec GmbH).
the "Value4Cloud" project focuses on the development and testing of value-added services, not least to foster quality and trust in cloud computing (coordinator: fortiss GmbH).
"MIA" includes the establishment of a trustworthy cloud platform to analyse and manage information (coordinator: Technical University of Berlin).
Cluster 2: Industry
"Cloud4E" will involve small and medium-sized businesses to develop simulation tools for product development, particularly in the field of drive technologies (coordinator: Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS).
The "PeerEnergyCloud" project plans to use cloud computing for smart grid control and optimization processes (coordinator: Seeburger AG).
The "SensorCloud" project aims to set up a platform for multi-dimensional analysis and use of sensor data (coordinator: QSC AG).
Cluster 3: Health
"GeneCloud" will develop cloud applications to support small pharmaceutical businesses in the screening of drugs (coordinator: Transinsight GmbH).
The "HealthCloud" project will provide new cloud services, for example for efficiency tests based on the secondary use of clinical and medical routine data (coordinator: Averbis GmbH).
The "TRESOR" project plans to establish a Cloud Ecosystem to analyse and efficiently use medical record documentation (coordinator: medisite Systemhaus GmbH).
Cluster 4: Public Sector
The "CloudCycle" projects will set up an open-source platform to support the entire life cycle of cloud services and test its application in school administrations and citizens' portals (coordinator: regio iT aachen GmbH).
The "goBerlin" project will create a platform to develop innovative applications for citizens, industry and administration (coordinator: Berlin IT Service Centre).
