NSW: AMA gives guarded endorsement of vaccination plan
The Australian Medical Association has welcomed the government's plan for a meningococcalvaccination scheme, but says it won't be enough to stop the disease.
AMA Vice President TREVOR MUDGE says the plan will reassure the public, but has seriouslimitations.
He says it will only work against the C strain of the bacteria, which accounts forjust 30 per cent of cases.
And he says even if all the high risk groups -- young children and teenagers -- arevaccinated, the disease could still strike low risk groups.
Dr MUDGE says the real answer lies in boosting funding for research.
He says it's not cost-effective to extend vaccination across-the-board, and it makesmore sense to spend more developing vaccines against other meningococcal strains.
